Measuring Molecular Mobility with Macro Fluorescence Imaging
18 Aug 2010: This application note examines GFP in live plants and observes systematic differences in areas non-invasively. This demonstrates that molecular mobility can be measured by macro imaging with steady state fluorescence anisotropy with the additional benefits of a large field-of-view which compliments both high throughput, in-vitro assay and in-vivo, non-invasive studies.

Application Data from Recent Oil Spill to Help Determine the Environmental Impact
13 Aug 2010: LECO has released a new application note highlighting the analysis of two petroleum samples obtained from the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Using a Pegasus® 4D GCxGC-TOFMS with GERSTEL autosampler and ChromaTOF® software, the analyst was able to resolve and identify an unprecedented number of individual components in a single analysis for the ultimate in high throughput.

Biodiesel (FAME) Analysis by FT-IR
09 Aug 2010: The interest in biofuels has increased because of rising petroleum costs and fuel stocks running out. This application note demonstrates the ability of the Nicolet FT-IR spectrometer family coupled with the unique Smart ARK ATR accessory for a simple analysis of Biodiesel (FAME). This shows that infrared provides a rapid, precise and accurate tool for biofuel analysis.

Ultratrace Interference-Free Analysis of Solar-Grade Silicon Wafers by ELAN DRC II ICP-MS
09 Aug 2010: Lowering the cost of silicon wafers in solar cells can result in more impurities. This application note presents a simple sample-preparation method for the ultratrace interference-free analysis of solar-grade silicon wafers using the ELAN DRC II ICP-MS. This method was shown to obtain accurate, sub-ppb (μg/L) level results quickly.
PerkinElmer, Inc.
Analysis of Samples from the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill by GCxGC-TOFMS
20 Jul 2010: The recent oil spill off the coast of Louisiana, in the Gulf of Mexico, is the largest oil spill in US history. The ability to identify the chemical make-up oil samples from this spill will be an important tool utilized by those responding to this event. This application note demonstrates the ability of LECO's Pegasus 4D GCxGC-TOFMS system to identify a large number of components in a single analysis.

Analysis of Triazine Herbicides in Water Using LC-MS/MS and TraceFinder Software
12 Jul 2010: In this application note, TraceFinder software was used in conjunction with an online preconcentration system, EQuan™, for the robust and reproducible analysis of large volumes of drinking water. Triazines were quantitated at the sub-ppt level, and several commercial bottled drinking water samples and one sugar-free soda sample were analyzed for the presence of triazines.

Accurately Quantify PAHs Down to 5 pg On-Column
12 Jul 2010: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common environmental pollutants, affecting air, water, and soil quality. This application note presents the Rxi®-5Sil MS column and optimized temperature program as an excellent solution to the challenges posed by SIM PAH analyses. This GC/MS SIM analysis allows for a very broad calibration range, in this case 2000-fold from 5pg to 10ng while maintaining exceptional linearity.
Restek Corp.
Detecting Trace Levels of Mercury Using Atom Fluorescence Spectrometry (AFS)
12 Jul 2010: This application note discusses the detection of Mercury within a waste treatment plant using mercur Duo fluorescence technology. By adjusting the equipment sensitivity an optimum measuring range can be configured to carry out stable and efficient detection with minimal sample dilution and the possibility of introducing automation and autosamplers.
Analytik Jena
Rapid Screening Method for PAH Samples
07 Jul 2010: Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are carcinogenic and mutagenic in humans. This application note represents the fastest screening method available for Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) using a conventional GC system. The narrow bore GC columns do not require any special hardware or modification to the GC system.
Phenomenex Inc
Using the NanoDrop 3300 Fluorospectrometer for Cancer Research Applications
05 Jul 2010: The application note demonstrates the NanoDrop 3300 fluorospectrometer can play an integral role in relevant and diverse cancer research applications. This unique, ultra-small footprint instrument measures micro-volume samples and offers convenience with pre-configured methods for common fluorophores; but is also flexible enough to be able to customize user-created methods and handle a wide range of fluorophores.
